PLAGIARISM is rife in the craft scene and I was even accused of it myself recently by a local imitator who started after me and has been operating a mere 2 years.
My work in ceramics however predates the internet by a decade as this image shows.
Trixie Delicious is an internet brand I established in 2006 to keep my online persona and private life separate. The inspiration for my work goes back to my time at Elam 1982-87 where I completed a BFA in Sculpture with honours.
I sold reworked ceramics under my name Karen Dennis from 1990- the freedom plate above-at WORLD in high st when it was just one little store. They now stock my trixiedelicious brand.
I also sold my ceramics through The Fish Shop Gallery (Ponsonby) in the early 90s where I had two solo exhibitions.
While we all enjoy the internet it is wise to remember it has a very short history unlike people and their ongoing art processes- mine spanning almost 3 decades.

Lots of new customers seem to be turning to the internet for their shopping needs.
Makes sense when you can't find those much need F U C K E R plates or that Whore Slut teacup duo at your local mall.
One thing you must have in place before proceeding however is a Paypal account or the ability to pay through Paypal with a credit card or visa debit card.
Most online vendors/shops don't care for old fashioned bank- transfer- 3 weeks later- nonsense in regard to International sales.
We want to see our hard earned dollars straight away so make sure you get yourself set up BEFORE ordering. Then you don't miss out and you get your stuff much faster eh?!!

Coco de Mer have been selling my plates for a few years now in their stores in Los Angeles, London and more recently in NYC.
I was happy to find out yesterday Christina Aguilera became a trixie Coco customer and purchased a couple of plates from their Melrose store.
Her privacy considered I will not divulge the words she chose but they were very naughty indeed.
How very fitting given that new racy look and video shoot of hers.
Wouldn't it be cool if some naughty china made it's debut via a Christina video- hey my fingers are crossed!

I bought the Big Lebowski set of coasters but have put them up on the wall where they won't be damaged by careless shenanigans after partaking- bound to happen ya see.

RIP Chase aka Chuppy, aka the Wonderdog....
Our family dog died yesterday aged 15 1/2 that's about 90+ human years.
Not from old age but as a result of being run over up at our boatshed, her fave place.
The last day of our holiday we were wondering if this was going to be her last summer up on the Kaipara, given her advancing years.
Partially blind and deaf and some arthritis in the back legs meant she didn't hear the car start up and didn't move in time even though the driver reversed slowly...
Five last gasps and she gave in to the inevitable facing the wharf her fave bait scrounging place.
Adios amigo, you were a great companion for 15 years and I will miss our walks together in the early morning.
I hope you're in doggie heaven having a good old hoover for those leftovers,

I just pulled out a third Wrath plate from a bake to complete a Seven Deadly Sins assemblage and for the third time a mysterious hairline has appeared on the edge- WTF?
Now and again this does happen but three times with the same word over three consecutive days.
This set just doesn't want to be completed and I'm starting to think there is something weird going on in my studio......it's almost Halloween!

Pulling plates out of a hot oven is an occupational hazard for me and I've been burned many times when just grabbing a tea towel instead of putting my mitt on.
This time however my mitt caused me to burn myself as it caught on the hot oven rack above which stuck to my skin and came out of the oven along with the plate I was carrying...
It might be time I bought some burn cream for my studio!

I'm finally installed in my new space- a bit smaller than the last, but not as cold with a northerly window, good light and nice high ceilings. The surroundings are very pretty, as this is a Victorian heritage building restored in the 90s. Typically lively neighbourhood in the vicinity of Krd, it feels like action central.... on your marks get set go!

Some great Etsy news. Next weekend 30- 31st May at the San Mateo Fairgrounds in San Francisco is the Maker Faire, the biggest D I Y festival in the world.
Big sponsors are Etsy, Craft magazine, Make magazine, Google, Yahoo and many more with an audience of thousands.
Etsy requested my Beauty and Brains cup and saucer set to join their permanent press collection for the Maker Faire so they will be displayed on the Etsy stand and used for their market displays traveling around the USA.

Do you know the feeling?
After working hard on an idea for some years now, ever mindful of copyright it really gives me the shits when some lame arse gate crashes my party!
To do it right under my nose, on a NZ craft site that I built a profile with is even more infuriating.
If you wanna rip me off can you please at least try to do it with some style, not shitty stick on letters from the $2 shop on top of nasty cheap chinese made plates.

ON the Move Again groan

Two reasons to move;
Builders are building a fire proof wall and taking out the light in my studio as dictated by the council.
Corporate paranoia within the building my studio is in has resulted in a firewall installation which slows my Etsy connection.
That was what I thought but breaking news is that Telstra is to blame. After the building owners put in a new expensive fibre optic system it now doesn't connect very well to some major American sites- Etsy being one of them! So much for being the new hip internet provider.
*** If you are an Etsy user DO NOT move to Telstra- they suck!!****

Of course moving a tonnage of china is no easy process so I may be hard to communicate with for a few weeks while I get sorted.
I am quite glad to be moving from Twatsville and its fibre optic nightmare, the honeymoon is most definitely over.....

The Kills and kisses

I LOVE the Kills, so when they played onThursday 26th in Auckland at the TransmissionRoom and I had the opportunity of meeting them through a friend I had to show my appreciation.
This portrait plate was on my Etsy shop but I knew it had to be with it's rightful owners.
To my delight both Alison and Jamie loved it so much they planted kisses on both my cheeks and declared no-one had ever given them a gift as fab as that. Jamie also commented that I made his skin look great awww so sweet.
They took the stage 15 min later and rocked us with their unique style of garage blues. The hits Black Balloon and The Last Day of Magic were the crowd pleasers but their encore version of I Put a Spell on You really gave me goosebumps.
I wish I'd had my camera on the night but these shots will have to do until next time.....

Autumn Home Show Designer Rooms WINNER

Approached recently by designers Sugarmonkey to create an assemblage for their decadent display in a designer room at the Autumn Home Show, how could I refuse....a defiant anti recession attitude and great design opulence this should be a highlight at the weekend.
Here is a sneak peak of the plates- the Seven Deadly Sins.....I can't wait to see them in an extravagantly lavish setting.

Quintron and Miss Pussycat

Thursday evening was more exciting than the usual going to a gig at newly revamped venue Cassette 9. Not sure what to expect of Swamptech duo Quintron and Miss Pussycat, it soon became a musical highlight for the year so far. Recent rumours made everyone curious to hear the handmade drum machine and keyboard Swamtech New Orleans boogie. Quintron's infamous Drum Buddy invention has been bought by the likes of Laurie Anderson Wilco and most recently Kanye West and when you look at the promo video you'll understand why.
A sound you might describe as the B52s meets Electro Voodoo Blues and then deep fried in chicken grease and washed down with plenty of whiskey, the contagious energy and dance inducing duo had the audience enthusiastically joining in a conga line while chanting a chorus of Motherfucking Badass.
The hour and a bit set, part of a whistle stop antipodean tour, left everyone wanting a lot more and hopefully they will come back soon if the whiskey doesn't get the better of them.....
This plate is my tribute to a great night out, thanks Quintron and Miss Pussycat!

I enjoyed a little hand made retail therapy on local (NZ) site Felt and bought two items from seller SweetWilliam.When they arrived I was delighted they were even better in life than in the photos.
Swans are hard to beat as a romantic image and who doesn't chuckle at the kitschy images of Old Lizzie in her finery. Lovely block-mounted prints and printed clay brooches using images of teacups orchids and birds are some of the best items and very affordable- go on spoil yourself, you won't be disappointed!

When a parcel arrived recently my daughter got very excited as the sender was named Versaci-I think she misread it as Versace and thought Mum had splashed out on couture.
Of course it was something so much more interesting. Somewhat obsessed with vintage zippers AmaliaVersaci uses them as a base material for her jewelry. I bought two zipper chains- one for a present, one for myself and love it. The perfect weight and colors it is one of those pieces where only after closer examination you realize the chain links are in fact zip sliders. She also fashions these into earrings in a very successful way. Gift boxed and with fast shipping from NJ to Auckland I can't fault this inventive recycled jewelery.

Punishment for being mean to my son

A few posts ago I played a mean trick on my half asleep son and now I'm getting the karmic payback. My current studio is in a large company building and they are changing their communications system to go fibre-optic. What does this mean to me?
Two things- I have diggers working just outside my studio drilling holes for cable which is extremely noisy and could take a few weeks! When completed however the new system will be lightning fast. I am hooked into that system- yay.
In the meantime the workday fashion will be taking a nosedive. No point getting fussy with the hairdo right?
Here's hoping there are no major vibrations with all that drilling- yikes!!

In my new space I have bars on the windows which don't open AND we've had the hottest summer day in Auckland since 1868.This doesn't matter because the noisy old air conditioning units keep my paint from drying on my brush and me cool enough to do my thing.
The bars have their uses though as I'm able to bend my hangers around them and display my seconds. Most are flawed in some way- a hairline, chip or some heat marks, but at $10 a plate whose nit-picking...

Now that I'm doing the full trad working week I look forward to the weekend more than ever.
So hubby and I head north to the Kaipara Harbour to our old boatshed on the wharf road Whakapirau. We have three buildings that sit on the Queens chain, so you don't own the land just the buildings. The main shed is 135 years old but relocated up the harbour in the 50s. The out-buildings are from different eras- one a former grain store from the early 1900s, the other a roadworks building from the 60s.
Together they are our humble rustic little get away from home and the city....

The key word here is art, as my first passion, this is the main focus behind Vandalized Vintage so it always surprises me a little when people inquire about the use of my plates.
While the product I paint with, Pebeo, a porcelain paint from France is a difficult medium to use it is also the only product gentle enough to add or fuse to old plates. This is simply done by baking in the oven at a low temperature of 150 after a bonding period of no less than 12hrs. The results do vary- certain surfaces grab the paint better than others and if the surface is worn it seems to work less well, smudging or running into the crazing or worn patches.
I suggest if you want dinner ware you can thrash on an everyday basis my stuff won't do the business as that was not my intention in the first place.
And so we come back to art. My intention has always been to elevate the discarded old plate to the status of a modern design object.
Dining is still an option- finger food, cups of tea or coffee and then a gentle hand wash after.
It's all about respecting the vintage quality of the plate and appreciating the modern twist- text, drawing or statement.

Working away from home

2009 has been a new start for me as far as separating work from home.
Last year I could not see the carpet for the china in my bedroom, now I'm going off to a studio space every week day, organized with oven for baking, plenty of shelving and a separate table for painting- ahh the luxury!
Some things I will miss of course- fixing myself food whenever I feel like it, having the house to myself and visiting local shops and fellow crafting friends who live nearby. Also the environs are somewhat different- modern house with a sea view in a friendly hood versus industrial building, formerly a cosmetics factory, with bars on the windows and no outlook.
The food choices aren't spectacular come lunchtime- except for sushi man on tuesdays BUT there is my hubby- works in another part of the vast building- and a great gal Margaret, also known as Miss America-a former US citizen- who has lovingly purchased a fuckface teacup for hubby, a moody bitch teacup for herself, and bitch face plate to hang with the horny one she has at home....
I'm also eyeing up the vast empty walls around the building as potential Trixie gallery space, esp the grubby common room kitchen space on the lower floor, which would be the perfect location for a shithole, dump or ghetto plate assemblage with an arse and crap thrown in for good measure!
Can't complain though, the space is more than adequate and reasonably priced- people around me are friendly and funny and occasionally buy or order something and the pressure of defined work hours makes me more productive, at least that's the plan.
The big bonus of course is Nige and I have our bedroom back and work-free weekends, except for the fleamarket shopping which nearly always includes plate purchases. We also get to lunch together which is sweet....your office or mine honey?
